The cookie scanner crawls the pages of your site that it can reach and lists the cookies, trackers and pixels it finds, sorted into categories, with the third parties that set them named. It scans again on the schedule your plan includes, so the list is never more than one scan old.
What a scan gives you
The scanner crawls each domain you connect to your GrantCookie account and catalogues the cookies, trackers and pixels it can find. It sorts them into categories and names the third parties that set them. Every plan includes the scanner.
The result is your cookie inventory. The GDPR guide explains that the scanner re-checks on every scheduled scan, so the banner asks about what is really there. The cookie policy generator turns the same inventory into draft cookie policy text for you to review.
How often it scans again
- Free: a monthly scan.
- Growth: weekly scans, with an email when a scan finds something new.
- Scale: daily scans, with the same change alerts.
The pricing page compares scan frequency, change alerts and the other differences between the plans.
What it may miss
The scanner reports what it can reach on the pages it crawls at the time of the scan. It may not find cookies set on pages behind a login, set by scripts that load only in certain conditions, or added to your site after the last scan. The inventory is never more current than the last scan, and a scan is not a guarantee that every cookie on your site has been found.
Under the terms, you decide which category each cookie belongs in, and checking the scanner’s inventory and categories is your responsibility.
Personal data in scan results
Scan results describe your website rather than a person. If a scanned page contains personal data, for example a name in a page address, GrantCookie processes it only to produce your scan results and treats it as customer personal data under the data processing agreement.
Before you scan
The terms do not allow you to scan a domain you do not control without the owner’s permission. To check one public page of your site before you create an account, use the free scan. What is the difference between the free scan and an account scan? compares the two.
