Where opt-in applies, non-Google tags stay blocked until the visitor gives consent. On Growth and Scale, with Google Consent Mode v2 on, Google’s tags stay loaded but send cookieless pings without setting the cookies the visitor refused. The choice is stored in your consent log, and the visitor can change it at any time.
Refusing takes one click
Reject all is one click and the same size as Accept all. Visitors can also use the switch for each category: necessary, preferences (functional), analytics and marketing. No optional category is switched on until the visitor turns it on.
What happens to your tags
- Where opt-in applies, as under the GDPR, non-essential cookies wait until the visitor chooses, and non-Google tags stay blocked until the visitor gives consent.
- On Growth and Scale, the banner sends the four Google Consent Mode v2 signals, set from the visitor’s choice: ad_storage, analytics_storage, ad_user_data and ad_personalization. With Consent Mode on, Google’s tags stay loaded but send cookieless pings, so Google can still model conversions without setting the cookies the visitor refused. How Google models conversions is determined by Google.
- The banner can apply a choice only to tags and scripts installed as our documentation describes. Tags installed in any other way may set cookies regardless of what the visitor chose.
In opt-out markets
Where a US opt-out law applies, such as the CCPA, cookies can run until the visitor opts out. A “Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information” link appears on every page, with a preference centre where the visitor can opt out.
What the consent log records
Each choice is stored with the time in UTC, a consent ID and the categories allowed, together with the version of the banner the visitor saw. The choice for each category can be an acceptance, a refusal or an opt-out. A record does not contain the visitor’s name, email address or IP address. You can export the log on Growth and Scale.
Changing their mind later
A re-open control stays on every page, so visitors can withdraw or change their choice at any time. The record keeps the date and time to show when consent was given, changed or withdrawn.
Anything the banner stores in a visitor’s browser, for example to remember their choice, is stored on your behalf. Your own cookie policy is the place that describes it.
