On the Growth and Scale plans, the GrantCookie banner sends the four Google Consent Mode v2 signals from each visitor’s choice. When a visitor declines, Google’s tags stay loaded but switch to cookieless pings, so Google can still model conversions.
What Google Consent Mode v2 does
Google Consent Mode tells Google’s tags, such as Google Analytics and Google Ads, what the visitor has agreed to. Version 2 added two signals, ad_user_data and ad_personalization. It is not a law, but since March 2024 Google has required consent signals for visitors in the EEA to keep ad personalisation, remarketing and measurement working. It affects sites that use Google Ads, or use Google Analytics data in Google’s ad products, and have visitors in the European Economic Area, the UK or Switzerland.
The signals the banner sends
The banner sends ad_storage, analytics_storage, ad_user_data and ad_personalization from the visitor’s choice:
- After Accept all, all four signals are granted.
- After Reject all, all four signals are denied.
When a visitor declines
Google’s tags stay loaded but send cookieless pings, so Google can still model conversions without setting the cookies the visitor refused. Non-Google tags are treated differently: where opt-in applies, they stay blocked until the visitor gives consent. Visitors can reopen their preferences at any time and change their choice.
How Google Consent Mode behaves, including how Google models conversions when a visitor declines cookies, is determined by Google.
Setting it up
Paste one script tag into the head of your site, before your analytics tags. With the tag in place, the banner is live, consent is logged and, on Growth and Scale, Google Consent Mode is wired up. There are set-up guides for WordPress, Shopify and Wix, and any other site works through Google Tag Manager or the JavaScript API. The banner can apply a visitor’s choice only to tags and scripts installed as our documentation describes. Tags installed in any other way may set cookies regardless of what the visitor chose.
Google Consent Mode v2 signals come with the Growth and Scale plans and are not included on the Free plan. Growth and Scale both have a 14-day trial, with no card needed to start. See pricing for what each plan includes, and our Google Consent Mode v2 guide for more on what Google expects.
